Live Tool Demonstrations: What HYTORC Showed at MTE Zondereinde and Amandelbult

HYTORC conducted dozens of live demonstrations across both events, showcasing five key products from its current portfolio. Each demonstration was designed to be concise and operationally relevant, allowing visitors to understand the practical application of each solution in a mining context.

  • LIGHTNING PUMP - Smart

The LIGHTNING PUMP -Smart is HYTORC's battery-operated hydraulic pump, designed for fully automatic operation in demanding field conditions. It features a 7-inch glove-compatible touchscreen for tool and torque selection, a 48V, 1,170 watt-hour battery for extended shift use, IP65-rated dust and water resistance, and built-in bolting data capture. It can power up to four tools simultaneously. For mines where corded power is not always accessible, the LIGHTNING PUMP -Smart offers a genuine operational advantage.

  • HYTORC TRUE-LOCK Reaction Washer

The HYTORC TRUE-LOCK Reaction Washer is a reaction washer system that eliminates the need for a traditional reaction fixture, removing a key source of operator injury risk during bolting. It is designed to work in harmony with HYTORC torque tools to deliver safer, faster, and more repeatable results.

  • STEALTH Hydraulic Torque Wrench

The STEALTH is a low clearance hydraulic torque wrench built for restricted spaces where standard tools cannot be positioned. Its slim profile, 360/180-degree Uniswivel, and optional tool retainer allow for hands-free operation, reducing drop hazards and operator fatigue. An ATEX-certified option is available for explosive environments. Torque output ranges from 377 Nm to 47,077 Nm/278 ft-lbs. to 34,722 ft.-lbs. across available models, making it highly versatile across a wide range of bolting applications found in underground mining.

  • LITHIUM SERIES II (LST)

The LITHIUM SERIES II is HYTORC's cordless battery-powered torque wrench, combining the portability of a battery tool with the precision and power output required for industrial bolting. It delivers consistent, repeatable torque up to 8,000 ft.-lbs./10,845 Nm without the limitations of hydraulic hose runs or pneumatic supply lines. This makes it particularly suited to locations within a mine where access is constrained and mobility is a priority.

  • HYTORC Connect App Bolting Software

The HYTORC Connect App is a cloud-connected bolting software platform that captures, stores, and reports real-time torque data from compatible HYTORC tools. It enables engineers and safety managers to maintain auditable bolting records, support compliance reporting, and monitor joint integrity across critical assets. In an industry where documentation requirements are tightening and digital traceability is increasingly expected, Connect provides a practical and scalable solution.

HYTORC South Africa participated in two consecutive mining trade expos in Limpopo, South Africa in May 2026, the MTE Zondereinde event held on 19 May and the MTE Amandelbult event held on 21 May. On both days, the HYTORC team delivered dozens of live product demonstrations to engineers, safety managers, and operational decision-makers working at some of South Africa's most significant underground platinum mines.

What Are the MTE Expos and Why Do They Matter to Mining Suppliers?

The Mine to Equipment (MTE) expo format is a purpose-built, site-proximate trade exhibition series that brings suppliers directly to the gates of active mining operations across South Africa. Rather than requiring mine personnel to travel to a central venue, MTE events are held at or near the recreation clubs of specific mines, putting suppliers in front of the people who specify, procure, and use equipment in the field.

The two May 2026 events targeted mines operating on the northwestern area of the Bushveld Complex, one of the world's most concentrated deposits of platinum group metals (PGMs). Combined, the operations visited produce in the region of 460,000 ounces of platinum per year.

MTE Zondereinde 2026: One of the Deepest Platinum Mines in the World

The first event took HYTORC South Africa to Zondereinde mine, located in the Northern Platinum Belt and operated by Northam Platinum Limited. Zondereinde has been in operation for close to thirty years and is consistently cited as one of the deepest platinum mines globally. It produces approximately 300,000 ounces of platinum annually and yields palladium, rhodium, gold, ruthenium, and iridium from the Merensky and UG2 reefs of the 2-billion-year-old Bushveld Complex.

The mine's primary extraction method is breast mining, supported by processing infrastructure that includes flotation, dense media separation, a base metals removal plant, and a smelter on surface. The life of mine is projected to extend beyond 30 years following significant western extension acquisitions made from Anglo

American Platinum in December 2017, a development that has added more than 20 years to prior estimates. Capital investments tied to that extension include a new vertical shaft, a purpose-built refrigeration plant, and an 80MW solar power farm that was under construction as recently as 2024.

The complexity and depth of Zondereinde's operations mean that bolting accuracy, safety, and data traceability are not optional considerations. They are embedded requirements in a mine where maintenance access is difficult, downtime is costly, and safety standards are closely governed.

MTE Amandelbult 2026: Precision Bolting at One of Amplats' Flagship Operations

HYTORC exhibited at MTE Amandelbult, targeting the Amandelbult complex in Limpopo, which comprises the Dishaba and Tumela mines along with associated concentrators and chromite recovery plants. All operations are owned and managed by Anglo American Platinum, now rebranded as Valterra Platinum.

Dishaba Mine sits approximately 40km south of Thabazimbi and 15km north of the town of Northam. It is an underground platinum mine with infrastructure including one vertical shaft, one raise bore, and four decline shafts, producing around 160,000 ounces of platinum per year. Tumela Mine, located nearby, operates at depths ranging from 160m to 850m beneath surface across two operational zones, Tumela Upper and Tumela Lower, with a life of mine that extends well beyond 2091.

The primary mining method across both operations is scattered breast mining, preceded by haulage development below the reef and supported by extra low-profile mechanized mining. In 2025, severe flooding caused operational disruption across parts of the complex, with Tumela's recovery taking longer than other sections. Despite this, Valterra maintained its 2025 metal-in-concentrate guidance, a testament to the resilience built into the operation.
